Researching the Kimberley’s Humpback Whales
The wild and magnificent Kimberley coast between Broome and Camden Sound is a biodiversity hotspot of international significance. The area is also an important resting, calving and feeding area for Western Australia's "Breeding Group D" population of Humpback Whales, now thought to number approximately 22,000.
Every year several thousand Humpback whales make their annual migration from the freezing waters of the Antarctic up the Kimberley coast to calve and breed in the tropical Kimberley waters.
Kimberley Whale Watching has been studying these magnificent cetaceans for the past four years, recording population density, behaviour, whalesong and individual tail fluke markings. We use a combination of high definition video, stills cameras and hydrophones.
In 2010 we are offering the opportunity to join us on one of five exciting "Whale & Reef" expedition charters on "MV Kimberley Escape" to explore the magnificent Kimberley coast and to study these magnificent cetaceans.
